How to order Low Carb at Starbucks

Today I decided to do a PSA (Public Service Announcement) about How to Order at Starbucks.  This seems to be a big concern to many people starting out a low carb lifestyle.  Yes, you can still drink Starbucks (or any other coffee place for that matter).  You just need to know what/how to order.  Let's start with what you should not order and that is a Frapp.  I know they are yummy.  I know that they are a great afternoon snack.  However they are from a pre-made powdered mix and so they can't be tailored the way we need them.  An Iced Coffee is just as tasty, just as yummy, just as cold and you can totally have them (or hot flavored for that matter too).

If you can't read Starbucks-ese, my cup in the photo says: SFCD = Sugar Free Cinnamon Dolce, WC = Whipping Cream, IC = Iced Coffee.  So you've decided you want a hot or cold coffee drink.  First thing you do is walk up and ask them what Sugar Free Syrup flavors they have (each Starbucks always carries different SF flavors).  Choose a flavor from the list they tell you.  Then just tell them to make either a hot or cold latte with the Sugar Free syrup and Heavy Cream or Whipping Cream instead of milk.  Tada!  Not hard right?  As a recap: sugar free syrup and heavy cream are your friends.  Enjoy!

  2. I take a reusable bottle with my unsweetened vanilla almond milk in it to starbucks and they use that in my drink for me..and then i just get the sf syrup.

    4. Perfect except that Starbucks makes their containers of whipped cream with fresh heavy cream (good) but also about 7 pumps of regular vanilla syrup...so no whip

  3. Thanks for the advice. Question though. How much heavy cream is in a medium latte. I ordered a medium hot latte with SF caramel and heavy cream. By the way that was the first time I ever ordered from a Starbucks. I have never drank coffee before. Being on the Adkins diet I was craving something. So I went for the coffee drink. Thanks!

    1. I'm honestly not sure how much cream they put in a Grande (Medium in Starbucks-ese) latte. I'll have to ask them next time I go. If I had to guess, I'd say 1/3 to 1/2 cup but that is purely a guess.

    2. Lattes are all milk (with a little espresso). A medium latte made with heavy cream probably has about 14 oz. of heavy cream. Yes, that is almost 2 cups! That has more than 80 grams of fat and 800 calories! That is NOT healthy!!!

    3. As low carbers we do not count calories, at least most don't. Also, as low carbers that kind of fat is what we are after. The fat in cream is NOT unhealthy as long as it is real cream and not the sugar-sweetened flavored ones.

    4. I am a low carber and I count calories. I stay under 25 carbs and 1200 calories a day, with ease. I agree - that much cream is not a good idea.

It's definitely too heavy for an every day drink, but for a once-in-awhile treat (especially when you NEED something decadent... *cough*... we all have those days ;) ), this is a better option than loading up on unhealthy carbs. I just have them add sweet-n-low to the coffee before they ice it, because all their sugar-free options have Sucralose :(

    6. Many low carbers have diabetes and certainly need to limit BOTH carbs and fat. No person with diabetes or prediabetic should be neglecting serious limitations on fat as well as carbs. Low carb information to be meaningful to many, many people will contain information on fat, as well.

    7. I'm a diabetic and limit my carbs to under 40 per day. I don't count fats, calories or anything else. I manage to continue to lose 3 pounds per week, completely off insulin and keep my blood sugar between 85 & 100 at all times. According to my dietitian, all my levels are where they're suppose to be. You don't need to count, carbs, fats, calories, sodium or everything else to maintain healthy levels.

    8. I'm a diabetic as well. I have a very hard time losing weight, keeping my sugars low and i watch my carbs very closely and workout 4 tomes a week. My A1C is 5.9 but i STILL watch everything i eat.

    9. An option I just learned was to ask for a "Sugar Free Cafe BREVE." This is a latte made with half and half.
      (a lot fewer carbs than milk, and a lot fewer calories than heavy whipping cream).

    10. I guess it really depends on what you get. You can make any drink into a latte. Like I get the cold Brew coffee and they add SF vanilla syrup and heavy cream but its NOT 2 cups of cream. Like a 1/2 cup if that. I guess if you ask for a latte and substitute the milk for heavy cream then its more than likely your getting that 2 cups of HC. I would advise against it. I would think it would make you feel yucky after drinking all that. Still my favorite if you need a serious jolt is an Iced Double shot with SG syrup and heavy cream. Really strong but yummy!

    1. Hi Kathy! It's difficult to give you an exact answer as there are different factors at play. The coffee is pretty close to zero. The Sugar Free Syrup is pretty close to zero so your only carb item is the cream. It depends on what size drink you order, how heavy handed your barista, whether your particular Starbucks uses heavy cream or whipping cream and what brand they use. According to fatsecret.com a generic heavy cream is 6.64 net carbs for an entire cup. I would assume any drink you order would have less than a whole cup of cream so basically the highest possible net carbs would be 6.

    4. I'm a Starbucks Barista and I would substitute heavy whipping cream (liquid) for the whip cream. We add regular(!) vanilla pumps when we make our cream. I'm a diabetic and try to find and make low-carb options like an Americano with a small splash of Heavy Whipping Cream (HWC).

  5. Yes! This is the best advice! I do this all the time. You have to make sure they understand what you mean about the heavy whipping cream b/c sometimes they still want to give you milk!

    1. So true about the heavy cream. Some baristas just don't quite "get it" when you order. I've had them still add milk like normal and then pour a layer of cream on top, as if replacing the whipped cream! LOL

  6. You'd have to watch out though, having a whole drink like a latte made with heavy cream would be terribly heavy and unhealthy if consumed in excess wouldn't you think?

    1. Hi Anon, I'm unsure which portion you would consider unhealthy?
      I'm going to assume the fat since we have all been brought up to believe that fat is bad. Part of the low carb lifestyle is to have higher fat so a latte made with heavy cream is perfect. If you restrict carbs and fat, your body goes into starvation mode and retains itself. It is important that if you are living a low carb lifestyle, that you also live a high fat lifestyle.
      If what you mean by unhealthy is because of cholesterol and other such blood work, there are many studies showing how low carb/high fat actually improves peoples numbers, including my own.

    3. Note she said "fat and carbs". Without those macros you're looking at protein as your only remaining macro, which you shouldn't eat too much of.

      The fat is fine, it's the carbs that are the problem.

    5. First let me start by saying that a low carb/high fat diet is extremely unhealthy. In order to lose weight in a healthy way and KEEP it off, you need to have a good balance of carb/protein/fats. Carbs give you energy and feed your muscles so that you can actually build muscle. Protein is ESSENTIAL for weight loss as it is very low in bad fats and helps your body burn fat instead of muscle. Fat is essential as well, but should be consumed very less than protein and carbs. I am speaking from experience as I am a bikini competitor/nutritionist. While not all fats are bad, you should be opting for avocados, olive oil, coconut oil, nuts, etc as your source, NOT heavy whipping cream for crying out loud. Carbs are NOT the problem. Carbs are very important in aiding weight loss, but they have to be complex carbs, such as whole grains, fruits and veggies! Low sugar is also a good way to go. However, the low carb/high fat concept will ruin your metabolism, and is just unhealthy. Please talk to a nutritionist first before listening to the Internet. Everyone's body is different and we all need different amounts of carbs protein and fats.

    7. Thank you for your uneducated personal bias bikini model. It is appreciated as the standard food industry driven rhetoric has contributed to mass obesity including my own before I discovered low carb - lost 85 pounds and maintained a healthy weight and renewed active lifestyle.

    8. WOW...it's amazing to me how most folks believe in the "one size fits all" model of nutrition! After my fourth child was born, my doctor put me on a complete low-fat diet to lose the extra 35 pounds. I followed it completely and after two months, gained 8 pounds! It wasn't until we found that my carb threshold for weight gain was about 43 carbs/day that I was finally able to lose weight. Almost everything low-fat has higher carbs (added sugar for taste...). For my metabolism, body type, genetics, etc. I have to stay completely away from high carb fruits and limit any whole grains to just every now and then. Proteins, good fats, berries and nuts are the ONLY way I can NOT gain weight. AND I have to exercise daily! Each one of my children are different, as well...two have to watch carb intake and two don't! To make blanket statements about what is good nutrition for EVERYONE is assanine!

You would think that a nutritionist would know that since it was my own dietician who put me on a low carb diet due to me being insulin reistant.

    11. I’m not saying that low carb is bad. But most people don’t realize that at Starbucks the heavy cream straight out of the carton contains 1 gram of sugar per tablespoon. So a grande latte made with heavy cream has a whopping 28 carbs, 1,260 calories and 126 grams of fat. If you add a sugar free syrup that adds 1 carb per pump. So if you have the typical 4 pumps in a grande, your drink now has 32 carbs. (Venti w/sf syrup would be 45 carbs, 1,620 calories and 162 grams of fat.) What will you eat the rest of the day?

  7. The barista I asked said that I can call the cream brevè because brevè means anything but milk. I think it'd be safe to assume that it could possibly mean half and half too though right? Anyhooo I ordered a venti sugar free cinnamon dolce brevè latte...quite the mouth full :)

    2. As a barista, if you order something with Breve, you will get half and half. if you specifically want heavy cream, ask for heavy cream.

    3. That's hysterical.. I've been ordering that a long time and you're right....if someone is in the car with you and are not familiar with this; they are like "wwhhaattt????"
      Any way, so, I always say "Breve". Should I be saying "whipping cream". yes, I have been raised the "look how much fat is in that!" However, I have recently been educated (and lost weight and felt better) on low/no carbs and sugar.

    4. I don't go to Starbucks that often but when I do, I order my coffee "...with 30ml unsweetened cream, no milk". That makes it easy to note it down as 1g carb and 100 cals.

    5. You def want to specify heavy cream, not whipping cream. they make their whipped cream with vanilla syrup, which is high in sugar/carbs. and yeah, breve at Starbucks is half and half.

  8. Hi there. I usually order a grande sugar-free vanilla latte with breve. At Starbucks, they use half and half for breve. You can expect 20 grams of carbs, 1 gram of sugar, and no fiber in a grande latte breve. The whole milk does have lactose (half and half is part whole milk) which reads as carbs. I still drink them, because I believe that a few carbs that aren't from sugar or grains is okay in moderation.

    2. Why not order a cafe misto made with heavy cream and SF syrup. The misto is brewed coffee with steamed milk, and there is less white stuff than in a late, but the end product is very similar.

    3. You’re actually getting 14 grams of sugar in a grande breve latte plus 4 carbs (1 per pump) from the sugar free vanilla. So 18 carbs. Not as bad as Starbucks grande sf vanilla heavy cream latte, which is 32 carbs

  9. Just an FYI some Starbucks use vanilla syrup to make their whipped cream. At my place it was A LOT. If you drink a lot of Starbucks, it's worth it to ask.

    1. Hi Anon, Thanks for bringing it to my attention that I didn't mention the whipped cream topping that Starbucks uses.
      Never add the whipped cream topping to your drinks as they are made with sugar. In my post, I'm referring to Heavy Whipping Cream, which is sort of like a thick milk that they would use inside of the drink, in place of milk.

  11. If you like espresso, you want an Americano which is a shot of espresso mixed with water. This cuts down on the amount of cream they use because some of the space is taken up by water. (Rather than a latte which is a shot mixed with milk/cream) So I get an Americano (either hot or iced) with cream and SF hazelnut. Perfect!

    1. Hi Anon, I have no idea what the rest of your meals look like to be able to say what's going on. I would say that Starbucks should be an occasional treat considering there are lots of artificial sweeteners (you are to restrict yourself to 3 servings per day per Atkins guidelines). Because of the heavy amount of artificial sweeteners and the amount of carbs that are not from veggies or meats, I would say that this drink is NOT for the Induction period (aka first portion of your diet). Also, I've heard that if you order Breve, they are using half and half, which adds carbs. Depending on the size of your drink, if you ordered sugar free syrup, etc you could be drinking 8-15 carbs a day in these drinks alone. While starting Atkins, you should be having approximately 20 net carbs per day with about 15 of those coming from low carb veggies listed on the Induction Foods list. It sounds like you may not be following the plan properly which may be why you aren't seeing any results. I suggest you read the Induction section at Atkins.com to learn what foods you can eat during the first 2 weeks (or however long you'd like to be on Induction). Here is the link to get you started. When I started the low carb lifestyle I stayed away from Starbucks for the first week, until cravings passed. no they're gone so its safer to go on occasion. safest drink there is the iced coffee with heavy cream, and add your fake sugar of choice. it's also probably the cheapest drink, so now my wallets on a diet too!

    and then giggle at the people using not fat milk... LOL!

    1. Keep in mind that Breve means to use Half & Half, not whipping cream. Half & Half has a bit more carbs than whipping cream, still a low carb alternative but be aware that it is not the lowest carbs possible. There's nothing that I've noticed or heard about that we can eat from Starbucks. I've heard that they have a pre-packaged meal called a Protein Plate but I'm unsure of what is in it to know if it's all low carb.

    2. The protein plate is a muesli flat bread (has raisins and sunflower seeds in it), about 3 slices of apple, about an ounce of cheese, a hard boiled egg and a packet of PB. Certainly higher in protein than anything else they have (pumpkin loaf..yummm!) but def not low rung Atkins friendly. I've had to avoid Starbucks since my usual is a grande double chocolaty chip frappe.....and I don't like coffee. :)

  15. I don't follow a low carb lifestyle so I wasn't aware that lowfat milk wouldn't a good choice! I don't think I could make the commitment to change to a whole new lifestyle but I always love to learn new things! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hi Anon! It depends on your lifestyle choices as to what would be a good choice. Low carb also means low sugar. Milk has lots of natural sugars. If you aren't watching your carbs and sugars, then lowfat milk is a decent option. It is a commitment to switch to low carb but it is fabulous! We eat lots of bacon, heavy cream in our coffee, steak with butter melted on top, etc. It's a very yummy way of life and I've lost tons of weight doing it!

  16. Our local Starbucks is awesome! They will make me a homemade Frapp. I have them blend my iced coffee, SF syrup, and whipping cream...tastes just a Frapp!! It's a special request, but most good coffee houses will do it!

    1. Great idea! My Starbucks always thinks I'm crazy when I request my drinks, making me repeat myself to confirm I'm asking for such nonsense as heavy cream with sugar free syrup. I can't even imagine their faces if I were to ask them to make me a custom Frapp! LOL I just might have to request is next time I'm in the mood for Starbucks!

    2. They do that to me too Layla. Last time he repeated my order three times. At first he was kind of like "You want what?" lol My favorite has always been a white chocolate mocha latte, always hot. I don't think there's anyway to low-carb it. I just go with iced coffee, SF vanilla syrup, heavy cream and two Splendas.

      SF Vanilla or Hazelnut Frappuccino w/Heavy cream
      Extra shot
      Vanilla or Hazelnut Extract
      NO Simple Syrup (Have to say this)
      Light Coffee Base (3 carbs in Fruit Sweetener)
      Heavy cream 6 carbs in about 10 ozs barista starting estimated)

      It's very good like this for a Frappuccino. Hope I estimated right. I've talked to a couple baristas to try to get it right.

    1. Hi Anon, I'm unsure as to which version of their iced coffee you are referring to since they have so many different kinds. You are able to customize your iced coffee with Starbucks so you can decide how many carbs you want based on what type of milk/creme you want it, sugar, Splenda or sugar free flavoring, etc. If you are talking about just walking up and only saying "Iced Coffee" to them without specifying what type of customization you want, then I believe they make that with whole milk and sugar as their default ingredients.

    2. Make sure if you are ordering an iced coffee, you request no classic syrup....they like to sneak that in there. I always order iced coffee, sub SF cinn. dolce with heavy cream. that's about as low carb/sugar free as it gets.:)

    1. They do have whipping cream available, however most will charge you extra for getting a special item on top of the crazy price of whatever drink you are ordering. If you don't mind taking your own, then you have control over the amount added as well as the price! Since you are still in the Induction phase of Atkins, you might want to stay clear for a while since you can only have 3 artificial sweeteners a day during Induction and the sugar-free syrups are made with Splenda.

  21. I used to work as a barista at Starbucks and other places. The amount of heavy whipping cream you're talking about here is at LEAST a cup (8 oz).

    Tall, 12 oz, w/ 2 shots of espresso, a SF syrup, the rest cream, that is at least 8 oz of cream in a 12 oz cup, espresso is roughly an ounce per shot, maybe a little more.
    Grande, 16 oz, w/ 2 shots of espresso, a bit more SF syrup and probably at LEAST 10 oz of cream.
    Venti, 20 oz, w/ 3 shots of espresso, more syrup, is going to be more than 10 oz of cream...

    Just something to bear in mind if you are also calorie counting.

  22. This is an awful thing to promote. Fat is healthy in moderation, but consuming at least 8oz of whipping cream in a drink is anything but beneficial to your health. You might as well order acute coronary syndrome with your breve latte.

    2. I lost 67 pounds in 8 months on low carb AND yes had this exact drink.......not even as a treat but DAILY. I stopped the low carb lifestyle and went to lowfat. I lost no more weight and ended up right back eating whatever. I have now in the last several months gained 20 pounds back. I just started back on my low carb lifestyle 2 days ago and expecting to start seeing results by this time next week. A low carb high fat lifestyle helped me lose weight, lose pure fat and inches, and reduce to blood sugar levels as well as get my cholesterol in check.     4. The confusion, which the US government unfortunately helped to perpetrate, is that dietary fat = serum fat (and dietary cholesterol = serum cholesterol). This has been disproved by countless studies and is very old news by now.

  23. Starbucks guidelines:
    iced coffee, tea, refreshers are always sweetened with liquid sugar (classic syrup), unless you specifically ask to not have your drink sweetened. Hence the carbs in iced coffee listed on their website. Whipped cream is always sweetened with vanilla syrup when prepared. You can ask for heavy cream, but everyone is correct; "Breve" is half and half. Soy is also sweetened, as is the Chai Latte. If you are a tea drinker, you can get the teas with heavy cream as well.     1. My understanding is that breve is half and half. Switch to Heavy Cream. If it's too thick for you, you can ask for half heavy cream and half water.

  25. My Starbucks go-to is an iced or hot venti, SF (your choice of flavor) AMERICANO with CREAM and whip cream! Extra SF flavor of course for me :-) An Americano is ESPRESSO plus WATER so thats why I ask for cream cuz that's like the creamer. It's like drinking a latte but w less carbs.
    BREVES are my once a year ultra delicious and rich treat!!

    1. Hi Anon! I am unsure of the details for Starbucks drinks. You can probably ask a Starbucks Barista or check the Starbucks website for nutritional details. Please be aware that Half and Half is not the lowest carb option, I would recommend Heavy Whipping Cream as a replacement to keep your drink as low carb as possible.

  29. Actually- Starbucks frappucinos are made from syrups (which come in "sugar free" as well) The three kinds are regular coffee base, sugar free base, and a cream base. So they in fact, can be modified to be less fattening, and glutinous. Also ice, and whichever flavor you so choose. Sugar free syrups STILL have a modified sweetener in them, which does not make them completely sugar free...I believe it is Splenda- which is just as equally bad, if not worse than regular sugar. BUT...as an partner of Starbucks, i know that the only way you are going to get a coffee that doesn't have a huge affect on your calorie, or carbohydrate count...is to do the "plain coffee" thing. Heavy cream is PACKED FULL of sugars and sodium, as well as a ton of milk fat. Whole milk or nonfat is a more healthier choice when it comes to a Starbucks beverage. Lastly, you are better off ordering the regular sweeteners...it's called moderation. You'll definitely be surprised to find out how much better you feel.

    1. ACTUALLY, this is a low carb blog advocating the LowCarbHighFat lifestyle. Nothing you said matches anything that this blog is about. Heavy Cream is not packed full of sugars. Whole and non-fat milk are what is packed full of sugars. For this lifestyle, sugar free syrups (yes, meaning made with Splenda, which is a sweetener not a sugar) and heavy cream is the way to go. You'd be surprised at how much better you would feel once you skipped the grains and sugars in your diet too.

  30. Layla, I love the way you advocate for your site! I used to do low carb, but my husband (and kids) hae totally adopted what some like to call Paleo. It's so akin to low carb, because we eat no grains or white sugars....we do indulge in honey and maple syrup but our pancakes are made from eggs and banana with almond (in a blender)....the first 7 weeks I lost 24lbs, so it works. I say all that to say I also gave up Splenda....that was HARD! but as a mom of 7, hey, I need a treat!! Thanks to you my once/week splurge is a sugar free Breve with heavy cream. I do indulge in the splenda that once/week. I can tell you that I also fast for my mornings and on my Starbucks day, I am almost giddy, and I have that about 1pm. I am often not hungry until 5! Folks do not get how fat makes you full and satiated. Not to mention that I get that amazing coffee/caffeine energy to pep me up. I will continue to enjoy that treat.   31. Yum! All this talk about coffee makes me want some! My favorite treat to get right now is 3 shots on ice with either 2 pumps of SF vanilla and a tiny bit (1/2 a pump) of SF caramel and heavy cream (my version of a low carb caramel macchiatto) or I get 2 pumps of SF cinnamon dolce and a pump of SF vanilla and heavy cream. Both are amazing, but the nutritional info does say that shots of espresso do have 1 gram of carb each. I would totally do the same syrup combos in Iced coffee too though. Also-if you want a hot drink-try an americano with SF cinnamon dolce and some heavy cream...AMAZING!
    PS-just to clear up some confusion, as a barista at Starbucks for over 7 years, the recipe standard for making whipped cream DOES have sugar in it (A LOT), however-we know as low carbers to not get that topping. Be sure to say you want heavy whipping cream on top. If the barista is confused-specify the liquid stuff. I've noticed that as paleo has become more popular, more baristas are aware of the fact people use heavy cream as a milk or half and half subsitute. Also, for those of you wondering about how much cream they put into your cup-it does vary by barista, but at one time when we featured the Iced Coffee with Milk beverage, the rule was to put coffee to the first line on the cup and the milk to the second. I don't know the exact amount that is, but you can at least have a visual now. Please know that you can customize your drink anyway you want. As a barista, I have a VERY Specific drink. Who cares if the barista looks at you crazy...it's your money and you should love the way your drink tastes!

  32. I'm so thankful to a Starbuck's employee 5 years ago who when I asked for something low carb, he knew exactly what to recommend. A sugar-free hazelnut heavy whipping cream latte. This wonderful "dessert" has kept me going on the low carb lifestyle. I went into a Starbucks yesterday where I've never been, and they seemed taken aback by my order. They said no one has ever asked for such a thing before. The real shocker to most is that you can actually drink these and lower your cholesterol and weight, as long as you stay on a low carb plan that is. You would not want to consume the heavy cream drinks if you are eating a high carb diet. You will gain weight.

  33. Breve at ANY coffee house is half and half. Strange looks and/or questioning the heavy cream come from it even being added to coffee being rare. A previous commenter pointed out the truth, there's at least 1 to 2 cups of cream dependent on the size you get. Starbucks uses, not possibly, but ALWAYS, vanilla syrup in the whipped cream. All coffee shops use regular sugared syrups in their whips, it's standard. Iced coffee and iced teas automatically come with classic sugar syrup, unless you specify otherwise and your barista may not check with you.

May I just comment about all of the people who seem to want to argue over how much cream is actually in the cup; or whether or not there is ALWAYS sugar in the cream, whipped or not; or whether or not Splenda is good or Satan incarnate; OR the low carb lifestyle is healthy or fatal. For starters, I don't believe the author of this blog intends to advocate going to Starbucks several times a day or even once every day. I believe she is trying to point out that as a TREAT you can still have a beverage from Starbucks. Apparently she has been doing this for some time and it has not stopped or slowed her progress or I do not believe she would be advocating it. With this and all posts like these we must keep in mind that not all things will work the same for everyone. Your experience may differ. Every single person must experiment and discover what works for them. For the general haters of low carb:Trust me when I say that I have tried EVERY diet ever recommended by man. I have cut calories/fat in all sorts of ways, ratios, levels of exercise, etc, etc. and never lost a pound, spent my days starving and GGGGRRRRUUUUMMMMPPPYYY. With all sorts of tummy issues the whole time. Eating low carb I lose effortlessly, am never hungry, eat more veggies than on my normal non-dieting diet, have little to no tummy problems, maintain a steady healthy blood sugar level, and maintain a comfortable sense of well being and happiness. My energy levels soar, I feel awake and aware and ALIVE. So which is healthier...eating barely nothing, being miserable, and maintaining a weight of 300 pounds or eating a simple, sensible, whole food filled, low carb diet(I eat very very few to no "frankenfoods"), and losing weight with wonderful blood levels and more than enough energy to care for my three children? I appreciate this blog post as I have myself been experimenting at Starbucks to find what I could have and enjoy there. The once-a-month or so treat for me is something I enjoy and I'm excited to try some of the above suggestions to heighten the pleasure of my treat. Drinking a yummy yummy beverage knowing that the scale is still going to be kind to me is like a secret naughty knowledge that I will just smile about while wondering the mall; just me and my Starbucks.

  37. I'm a Starbucks barista, breve will give you half and half, specify using heaving whipping cream instead of milk because it can get confused with whipped cream. All Starbucks (with exception to the ones in Target, Barnes and Noble, other stores) carry the same sugar free syrups: Cinnamon Dolce, Hazelnut, Vanilla, Caramel and a "skinny" Mocha which does have different nutritional value than the other sugar free syrups. Other great options are iced tea: green, passion fruit and black (unsweetened) and Americanos (shots of espresso with hot water or over ice).

I am not strictly on the Adkins diet, but generally eat as high protien as possible, I usually get a "skinny" Cinnamon Dolce (lowfat milk/SF Syrup) knowing full well that the milk is the most carb laden item. I didn't even think of heavy cream as an option. I only go maybe 3 times a week, it seems like a lot of people don't understand what moderation is and if they see advice that contradicts the low fat stuff that they're told is the "most healthy" they think you mean "drink a whole carton of whipping cream... While inhaling secondhand smoke and using IV drugs with a community needle".

    I have a quick question for you. I'm on the Induction phase and I noticed you said to eat about 15 carbs in just veggies. I'm curious how this is possible? Atkins says to only eat 2 to 3 cups of salad veggies a day and a cup or two of the other veggies depending on the amount of salad veggies.

    The problem is I don't see how you can get up to 15 carbs a day with just veggies using those guidelines. 3 Cups of Romaine lettuce for me only equal 3 or 4 carbs. 1 cup of peppers equals only 1 to 3 carbs. So on and so on. I'm just curious how you get or got 15 carbs a day in just veggies because I can't get anywhere close. Now if I eat a few huge bowls of salad or other veggies, maybe, but not using mushrooms, celery, lettuce, peppers, onions and etc. Am I missing something here.

  43. I am a party pooper at Starbucks. I take my coffee black so I always have an Americano. That's it. My friends look at me like I am nuts. Why miss out on all teh good creamy stuff? But I like the hot steaming black coffee. One friend was cutting down on lactose (large amounts messes with her stomach and spikes her blood sugar). She started adding sugar free hazelnut syrup to an Americano and a little heavy cream so her coffee is brown. She LOVES it. Just some more ideas if you are not into lots of milk/cream.

I am doing the low carb diet as well as watching calories and making healthier choices etc. Can someone please explain to me why starbucks does not offer a "sugar free" dairy product that's healthy for you? I understand why they cant have unsweetened almond milk (because of the possible nut allergies) but why can't they offer unsweetened soy milk? I was at my breaking point today craving something sweet, so I went to starbucks and ordered the sugar free mocha frapp. I specifically asked the barista if it was 100% sugar free because I can not have sugar and she told me yes. As I was driving down the road it tasted too good to me to be sugar free. I called back and asked if the soy they put into my drink was unsweetened and they said no. They proceeded to tell me that they do not carry unsweetened soy milk. To say the least I was furious. I feel like if a drink is advertised as sugar free (and I ask them if it's sugar free) then they should make it sugar free, rather then just one component of the drink being sugar free. I also asked if I would be able to bring my own soy milk unsweetened and unopened for them to use and they told me it was against their policy. I know I Could make this at home but when you're coming home from work sometimes you need it right then and there lol. I called starbucks corporate office hoping that if I made the suggestion of adding unsweetened soy milk that they might listen but I have not heard back yet. Does anyone else feel this way?

  52. As a barista: The amount of syrup is the same, depending on size, everywhere. We go on a 2,3,4,5 scale. SO :

    If you order a shortie : 2 pumps of syrup
    Tall: 3 pumps of syrup
    Grande: 4 pumps of syrup
    Venti: 5 pumps of syrup

    Unless you specifically tell us the amount of pumps, this is what you will get if you order one of the above sizes.

    Also, the whip cream is made with a specific number of vanilla syrup pumps per bottle.

I have eaten less than 20 carbs a day with as much fat as I want for the last 6 months and I've lost 90 pounds. So anybody on the Atkins diet, keep up the good work and drink a whip cream latte if you want.

  55. I would like to take a moment to point out to the person who does not understand the Low Carb High Fat lifestyle, or is still pissed over the high amount of fat, thus calories. That when one eats a high fat diet they typically have a lower caloric intake naturally. Fats fill you up and keep you full.
    Personally I could drink a Venti or Gande in one sitting when using heavy cream.

    When you eat a high fat diet (and very little carbs/sugar) you just don't over-eat/over-consume calories. Try it for a week. You can see for yourself.

  61. My favorite thing to get is just a regular coffee (espresso and water). Add in a little bit of SF cinnamon dulce and a little heavy cream. That way I'm not getting SO much heavy whipping cream from a latte (which is just espresso and milk/or heavy whipping cream) but just enough to taste. Less calories and less carbs. (: I also get it iced just make sure they put in the heavy cream before they put ice in the coffee or else it becomes lumpy/doesn't mix well!

  62. I'm cruising a bunch of websites looking for Starbucks options for LCHF (I'm on Atkins longterm), and found this on another site: "I've been doing keto on and off for a year and I'm a partner. Try any sugar free frappuccino. (my fave is so mocha) made with heavy whipping cream and a scoop of protein powder in place of the base. Two scoops for a venti. It's pretty much my greatest keto discovery." Haven't tried it, but am going to...once I double check to see if there's sweetener in the protein powder!

  65. Ok- I've done Atkins for 16 YEARS (yes, you read that correctly).... And I go to Starbucks EVERY DAY. This is what I get: a tall regular coffee in a grande cup (leaves me room for cream) and I ask for the heavy cream and pour about 3oz in- which almost fills the cup. I try to avoid a lot of dairy so this works for me. I also try to avoid CHEMICALS so instead of using sugar free syrups (which I used for years but then switched) I now go to the condiment bar and add two Splenda and CINNAMON from the shaker.... It's delicious and waaaaay better for you than the syrup!
    As a treat (like when I have a free reward and don't want to "waste" it on my cheap $1.90 coffee) I get the following: skinny mocha but substitute the skim milk for heavy cream. Personally, I drink it 2-3 servings (I get a venti of course cuz hey it's free). Skip the whipped cream if they ask (but it's not part of the skinny drinks anyway) because, as mentioned above, they are made with sugar added!

  67. Some of these comments are ridiculous. I see a nutritionist every month. Actually had visit today after having a sleeve gastrectomy 8/31. So, now that I'm one week away from my new normal diet I was reminded (as I was doing before my surgery) no calorie counting, little to no carbs, high protein, HIGH fat. I was told to come home throw out anything low or non fat. Being that I was a surgery patient I was referrred to a cardiologist as well. I informed him of the diet I was put on and he was completely agreeable, stated carbs (even natural) are the problem, not fats and on this diet I'm happy to say even my BP meds have been dc'd and my ECG and cardiac workups are tremendously improved.

  69. There are 20 tablespoons of heavy cream in every 1 cup. A tall is 12 oz. If you order a tall latte with heavy cream (minus the expresso added and sugar free pumps) One tall latte has but you above your 20 grams of carbs for the day for those who try to stay at 20 or below

  78. Interesting thread. It' obvious that most of the readers/repliers here do not understand a ketogenic diet. We've all been 'fed' (punn intended) so much misinformation our whole life about the foods that are 'bad' for us, an incorrect food pyramid (should be flipped) and a billion dollar food/diet and medical/medicine industry all designed to keep us sick and fat - in need of meds and desperate for any diet we can find. Education about what is considered 'fringe' or 'unhealthy is KEY here folks. Patent medicine only maintains your disease - so, diabetes for example - I'm type2 - will never be cured inside of a carb fueled body.
